Depending on your symptoms, one or more types of sleep study may be indicated to diagnose a sleep condition.

Types of Sleep Studies
-
Polysomnography is a comprehensive overnight sleep study used as the gold-standard diagnostic tool used to identify or rule out conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea, periodic limb movements and some parasomnias. It is a comfortable, non-invasive test that allows us to map your sleep architecture and form a highly precise assessment of your sleep.
Monitoring during polysomnography includes:
brain waves
oxygen levels
heart rate
breathing patterns
leg movements
eye movements
Overnight sleep studies are commonly performed in hospital but may also be undertaken at home in some circumstances.
-
A CPAP (continuous positive airways pressure) implementation study, or pressure titration review, is a highly effective, non-invasive process used to tailor sleep apnoea therapy to your needs. During this assessment, sleep scientists fine-tune your device's airflow settings while you sleep.
By finding the precise therapeutic pressure required to keep your airway gently open, we can eliminate snoring, prevent breathing pauses and improve daytime energy levels.
-
A Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is a specialised daytime assessment used to objectively measure your level of daytime sleepiness and identify disorders such as narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia. Conducted across the day following an overnight sleep study, the test consists of four to five scheduled nap opportunities spaced two hours apart in a quiet, dark room.
By monitoring how quickly you fall asleep and whether you enter rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during these brief opportunities, we can accurately diagnose the underlying cause of severe daytime fatigue and tailor an effective management plan.
-
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is a specialised daytime assessment used to objectively measure your ability to remain awake and alert in a quiet, dark and unstimulating environment.
Often required for occupational safety assessments, commercial licensing or evaluating the real-world effectiveness of your sleep apnoea or hypersomnia treatment, this test consists of four scheduled 40-minute trials spaced throughout the day.
Rather than measuring how quickly you fall asleep, the MWT evaluates your capacity to resist sleep when under quiet conditions, providing critical data to ensure you can safely and reliably perform daily activities and professional duties.
-
Actigraphy is a non-invasive method used to objectively evaluate your sleep-wake patterns over an extended period, typically spanning one to two weeks.
Unlike an overnight laboratory stay, this assessment allows you to maintain your usual daily routine at home. You will wear a small, lightweight device, resembling a wrist watch, that continuously tracks your movement levels and light exposure.
When paired with a simple sleep diary, actigraphy provides invaluable data on your real-world sleep schedule, total sleep duration and circadian rhythm alignment, helping us identify issues like insomnia or shift-work sleep disorders.
Depending on your symptoms, one or more types of sleep study may be indicated to diagnose a sleep condition.

Our Approach to Sleep Studies
A formal sleep study referral is made following a comprehensive medical consultation, where we carefully evaluate your specific symptoms and clinical history.
If both a hospital-based (in-lab) or home-based sleep study are clinically appropriate for your situation, we will discuss the unique pros and cons of each approach to help you make an informed decision that fits your preferences.
To ensure accessibility for all patients, we provide referral pathways to both streamlined private sleep studies and fully bulk-billed services.
Sleep Study Locations
Epworth Hospital Sleep Laboratory
